What Trump said
On 12 October 2026, President Donald Trump told a rally in Youngstown, Ohio: “I call it Somalia land, not Somaliland, because actually it’s a totally different country.” He added: “I think they should change the name immediately,” allAfrica (citing Horn Diplomat) reported. No sitting US president has said so clearly that Somaliland and Somalia are two separate countries.
How Hargeisa answered
The reaction in Hargeisa was joy. Breitbart News and Voice of Nigeria reported crowds in the streets waving US and Somaliland flags. The government said Trump’s words “underscore Somaliland’s distinct identity and its separate political reality,” Middle East Eye reported. Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adam welcomed what he called Trump’s acknowledgement of Somaliland as a distinct country and said the campaign for recognition will go on. The ruling Kulmiye party called for formal recognition. In Mogadishu, a statement said to come from the Foreign Ministry spread online, but State Minister Ali Balcad told Dawan it was fake.
The diplomacy behind the words
Trump’s remarks did not come from nowhere. President Irro travelled to Washington in September, Dawan reported, to make Somaliland’s case in person. In his interview with Breitbart News he put concrete offers on the table: cooperation on counter-terrorism, piracy and maritime security, and partnership at the port of Berbera. bne IntelliNews and Africa Confidential reported that Hargeisa has also offered the United States access to minerals. Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adam has carried the same message abroad.
Analysis: why this matters
This is the biggest diplomatic opening Somaliland has had in Washington since it restored its independence in 1991. The shift follows a deliberate campaign that spoke the language this White House understands: a partnership with something to offer. In international politics, recognition follows interest, not justice alone. Great powers recognise new states when doing so serves their own security and economic aims. Hargeisa’s leaders have built their case on exactly that rule.
Somaliland’s hand is strong. Berbera sits on the Gulf of Aden, near one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, at a time when Houthi missiles are striking across the Red Sea region. Somaliland has a long record of peaceful elections and handovers of power. It holds minerals the United States wants. And its coast faces Yemen, which gives it real value for maritime security.
The legal case gains weight too. Somaliland’s claim rests on its own history: separate rule as British Somaliland, independence on 26 June 1960, and the colonial-era borders it inherited. When the US president himself draws the line between “Somaliland” and “Somalia,” that case carries a weight in Washington it has never had before.
What it means for the region
- For Somaliland: morale and bargaining power rise sharply, and the Foreign Ministry gains a strong argument in every capital it visits.
- For Somalia: the pressure grows just as it enters a tense election year, with votes set for April and May 2027.
- For Ethiopia: Addis Ababa signed a port memorandum with Somaliland in January 2024. A warmer US attitude toward Hargeisa gives Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed a peaceful route to the sea, away from a war with Eritrea over Assab.
- For Egypt’s bloc with Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia, which opposes any change to Somalia’s borders, US interest in Berbera is an unwelcome shift.
Key points for decision-makers
- Treat Trump’s remarks as the strongest opening Somaliland has ever had in Washington.
- Build on them with a clear offer — Berbera, maritime security, counter-terrorism and minerals.
- Keep the 1960 independence and the inherited borders at the centre of the legal case.
Bottom line
Somaliland’s patient diplomacy has reached the one office whose view counts most. The next step Hargeisa is now pressing for is formal recognition by the United States, and its diplomats now have the president’s own words to build on.
